Can pizza dough be re-kneaded after it's been made into a ball?

I'm looking at this photo. Can this pizza dough ball be re-kneaded, or would that destroy the integrity and shape of the ball (or let too much gas escape)?

I'm under the impression that once a ball of dough is created, that you can't re-squeeze and knead. You're efforts is to transform this ball to a flat disc with as little manipulation as possible.
