Beer Battered Onion Rings

Hi All

These are a firm favourite in our house. They never last too long.

Beer Batter Ingredients

  • 75g Plain Flour
  • 50g Cornflour
  • 1tsp Baking Powder
  • 1tsp Tumeric
  • 1tsp Cumin
  • 1tsp Cayenne Pepper
  • 1tsp Fine Sea Salt
  • 150ml Beer (any Spanish beer or Lager will do)

You will also need…

  • 3 Large White Onions
  • 1 litre of Sunflower Oil (for frying)

Preparing the Beer Batter

Mix all the dry ingredients together before whisking in half the beer. When you have formed a thick batter, whisk in the remaining beer to form a smooth batter.

Preparing the Onion Rings

Peel and slice your onions into 1cm slices, popping them out into individual rings. Keeps the smaller pieces you aren't using in an air tight container to use again. Waste Not, Want Not!

Frying the Onion Rings

The onion rings will be deep fat fried so you will need a large saucepan or a deep fat fryer. You want the oil to be around 180°C. You can set this on your thermostat or measure your temperature on a sugar thermometer if you are heating oil in a pan. Be careful not to get the oil too warm.

When the oil is up to temperature, dips each onion ring into the batter mix ensuring it is well covered. place the onion ring carefully in the hot oil in the middle of the saucepan. They will cook really quickly to flip them over after 30 seconds or so. You can turn them a few times to ensure they are golden brown on all sides then lift them out using tongs and leave them on a piece of kitchen roll or a drying rack to dry off.

Do not add too many rings to the pan at one time as they will stick together and all the temperature of the oil will drop quickly. If this happens, allow the oil to come back up to temperature before adding any more onion rings.
