Can I just add Sichuan peppercorns to a chili oil to get the flavor?

Everything I've read so far is a recipe to make a chili oil from scratch whereas I already have one but bought the peppercorns separately.

Would it be a bad idea to crush the peppercorns and heating the chili oil then combining them? Or can I simply drop the peppercorns in and call it a day?
