How long can a cake stay at room temperature?

I baked a cake yesterday and I believe due to the nature of the frosting (which was made from dates and coconut oil), the cake had to be stored in the fridge (that's what the recipe said). However I want to try baking the cake again with a typical buttercream frosting, so theoretically it should be fine at room temperature, correct? I just wasn't a big fan of chilled cake and don't really want to refrigerate it if I don't have to.
