How can I cook a steak on the stove without setting off my smoke detectors and stinking up the house? [question]

I don't have the luxury of using a grille where I live so I have to resort to cooking on the stove. I've found an amazingly delicious recipe that uses the skillet going into the oven to heat it up, then cooking the steak on the stove. The steak came out SO delicious but there's always SO much smoke and the vent fan seems to do nothing. Is there anything I can do to eliminate this and enjoy cooking a steak in the house? Same reason as to why I can't cook burgers, either - the house fills with smoke and everything smells like hamburgers for the next few days.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.
