I'm about to make vanilla extract. What do you prefer...

For those of you that have made your own vanilla extract, do you prefer to use pure grain alcohol like Everclear, or do you like to use a bourbon? The very first time I made extract, I used vodka, and I didn't quite achieve the taste I was going for. It was still delicious, I also added the the little seeds from the pod, but I was going for a more robust/rich flavor.
