So I was at Bushcraft: 1792 in small town Alberta. A guy there was making a canoe from bark and lumber and sealed the joints with spruce pitch boiled in a little water under a strainer, scraped it off and slapped the goo in a pan. When he felt he had enough, say a liter, he added a couple spoonfuls of lard, heated and mixed.
The boat guy felt it was a good mix if he could chew it like gum! If it was sticky and grainy in his mouth he added more lard and tried again. Sure enough, when I was away from the shouldering pan the gum actually tasted like spruce! It was remarkably plain but the texture was sure there.
bon appetit
