Calling all tailgaters **French Onion Field Goal Cheeseburger**

Ingredients:

For the Caramelized Onions:

  • 2 tablespoons butter
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • 5 large onions, thinly sliced
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 2 tablespoons Marsala wine

For the Cheeseburger:

  • 4 slices store-bought Texas toast
  • 1 package store-bought au jus for dipping, optional
  • 6 4-ounce hamburger patties
  • 6 thick slices baby swiss cheese
  • 6 thick slices alpine-style cheese

Cooking Directions

For caramelized onions:

  1. Melt butter and olive oil in large skillet over medium-low heat.
  2. Add onions, salt and pepper to skillet and toss to coat.
  3. Cook, stirring often, for 20-30 minutes until softened and browned.
  4. Stir in Marsala wine and cook for 2 additional minutes; remove from heat.
  5. Place onions in thermos or other insulated container to keep warm.

For cheeseburger:

  1. Before leaving home, warm Texas toast in oven according to package directions; cool.
  2. Store in storage bag or container.
  3. Meanwhile, if using, make au jus according to package directions; store in

    thermos to keep warm.

  4. Pack burger patties and cheeses in chilled cooler until ready to grill.

To serve:

  1. Preheat grill.
  2. Grill patties 2 minutes per side; top each burger with 2 slices of each different type of cheese.
  3. Warm Texas toast on grill. When cheese is melted, remove patties and toast from grill.
  4. Place 1 patty on 1 piece of Texas toast.
  5. Top with large spoonful of caramelized onions.
  6. Repeat for 2 additional layers, ending with remaining onions on top.
  7. Close burgers with remaining 2 toast slices.

Serve with dipping sauce, if desired.
