Cooking chicken in cast iron?

I recently got a cast iron pan along with a flat cast iron grill for the stove top (cant have a grill at my apartment). Every time I try to cook chicken the pan gets way too hot even on medium heat and creates a lot of smoke. The outside ends up burning while the inside is barely cooked. Any suggestions for cooking with cast iron especially chicken?
