How do I do a dry black bean chili recipe with no tomato-based sauces?

I always use something like diced tomatoes or salsa or tomato paste when I make chilli and often broth.

I wanna make a really simplistic chili recipe around black beans and ground beef with whatever vegetables, cheese, and spices. It's the spice part that I'm not so sure about. I know the basics like some cayenne, chili powder, garlic, bit of turmeric, and cumin but what do I give it that adds enough taste to make up for the lack of any broth or tomato-sauces? Obviously I don't mean completely dry, I don't mind adding in some Worcestershire sauce if it works.

bon appetit
