I'm looking for a non-American bread recipe.

I keep hearing from people outside America that America's bread "tastes like cake", which is completely understandable as it takes me 15 minutes in the grocery store bread aisle to find bread without sugar in it (and even then it's only one or two brands of sourdough or French). I'm looking for a recipe for homemade bread that originated outside of the US so I can get an idea of what bread should taste like.
