Questions on Pot Roast in the Crock-Pot.

Planning on making a Pot Roast soon and the Crock-Pot seems ideal as I will be at work. The plan is to start it in the morning and then come back 8 hours later with a meal ready.

Questions I have:

I've seen most recipes say they sear their roast before putting it in the crock-pot with the other ingredients. Is this necessary? I really just want to prep the veggies the night before and toss everything in the next morning.

What kind of broth and or liquid is recommended for cooking the roast in? Chicken/beef/water, something else?
