Blueberry Compote

I like blueberry compote on my crepes, and I'm looking for a recipe, but every one I see has lemon juice. I don't want any hint of a lemon flavor. Is the lemon juice chemically necessary for the compote? Does the flavor just blend with the blueberries so that I wouldn't know it was there, or can I just omit it?
