Backstory: This recipe is a clone of one from many of my childhood Christmases.
We also used to have a custard or perhaps pastry cream version that I loved. No one remembers them but me (of course), and I'm not sure how to modify the recipe to achieve my desired result.
I'm hoping this will ring a bell for someone else, someone who's family perhaps still has this recipe? I'd like to make them as I'm far from home this year.
